We obtained our first Pudelpointer in 1996, Birchwoods Odysseus (Hershey), from Brichwoods kennel in Montana. Hershey was a natural from the start. We were killing training birds over him at 4 and 5 months of age. He is a natural retriever from both land and water. In addition to being a staunch pointer, he is also a superb tracker. Over all he is an exceptional bird dog.
We are active members of NAVHDA (North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association), and test our dogs in NAVHDA sanctioned hunt tests.
In his Natural Ability test Hershey obtained the maximum score, NA 112 Prize I. He also obtained UT 184 Prize 2 in his Utility test as a finished gundog. To date, Hershey has Sired three NAVHDA Breeders Award litters and the first Utility Breeders Award given to a Pudelpointer (it will be awarded later this year 2005).
We also obtained our female from Birchwoods kennel in Nov. 1999, Birchwoods Sphinx (Cocoa). Cocoa is also a very natural birdog, she has an intense prey drive, a very good nose, she is an intense pointer, and has a strong natural retrieving instinct. She is not as strong in the water as Hershey however, but Cocoa tends to back naturally. Cocoa received a UT 176 prize 2.
Both dogs have been certified free of hip displaysia by the O.F.A (O.F.A. "good"). These dogs have terrific dispositions and have been wonderful to have at home and in the field. Their coats have been judged: Hershey -dense / medium harsh, and Cocoa - medium dense / medium harsh.
